National Dog Day is celebrated on August 26 every year. It is a day where we honor, celebrate and recognize the number of dogs that bring us joy, companionship, and unconditional love. Dogs of all shapes, sizes and breeds, are celebrated on National Dog Day.

National Dog Day is a great opportunity to show your love and appreciation for your four-legged friend by volunteering at local animal shelters, donating to animal welfare organizations, and raising awareness on pet welfare and adoption. Let's all take a moment to appreciate the unconditional love and companionship we share with man's best friend on this special day!

History of National Dog Day

National Dog Day was founded in 2004 by Colleen Paige, an animal advocate and pet and family lifestyle expert. This day celebrates dogs of all shapes and sizes, including pure and mixed breeds! It is celebrated each year on August 26, to honor the roles dogs play in our lives. Collen chose August 26th as the day her family adopted her first dog, Sheltie, when she was just 10 years old.

Dogs lovers around the world come together each year to recognize the joy, comfort and companionship these loyal animals bring into our lives. In 2013, the day was even written into New York legislation, solidifying its importance in the New York State. Collaborations with rescue partners like The Humane Society and ASPCA have helped raise awareness on the millions of dogs looking for a home and need to be rescued.

National Dog Day's Mission

National Dog Day celebrates all breeds and dogs of all shapes and sizes. Its mission is to encourage adoption, recognize working dogs, and raise awareness about responsible pet ownership. Dogs are celebrated all over the world on this day and it serves as a reminder of all the wonderful ways dogs enrich our lives.

Bringing Awareness to Dog Adoption

National Dog Day has been a major platform in encouraging people to adopt a furry friend. According to Shelteranimalscount.org, it is estimated that approximately 3.2 million dogs entered shelters in the United States in 2023, and out of those, 2.2 million dogs found loving homes. This marks an increase of 109,000 adoptions compared to the previous year. Despite this rise, the total number of dog adoptions in 2023 is still nearly 108,000 less (-5%) than in 2019.

There are many adoptable dogs waiting in public shelters and many more dogs that are in need of being rescued each year, each without a home and in need of a family. Various events, such as pet adoption drives and fundraisers, are organized to help support this cause.

Avoid pet stores, backyard breeders, and puppy mills whenever possible, and instead check out your local shelter, rescue shelters, or websites such as bestfriends.org and petfinder.com to find your new best friend! All dogs deserve to find a home and live happy!

The awareness National Dog Day brings have helped reduce the number of stray dogs, while providing opportunity for all dogs to live a safe, happy and abuse-free life. Considering making a donation if adopting is not an option for you.

Recognizing Working Dogs

Family dogs and dogs that work play an important role in our society. National Dog Day honors their contributions and the remarkable role they play in our lives.

Working dogs are highly trained animals that help us in a number of ways, from search and rescue operations to protecting our freedom and safety by detecting bombs and drugs. We celebrate and bring attention to their invaluable services to our society. These dogs put their lives on the line every day for us and help keep us safe.

Their intelligence, loyalty, and dedication make them invaluable partners in helping those in need.

National Dog Day is an important platform to honor dogs that save lives and dogs that work tirelessly for us. Let us express our gratitude to these remarkable canines who dedicate their lives to protect, serve, and support their human counterparts.
